TASTE: thick, golden, custard-like flesh with a complex bittersweet, almost boozy finish that lingers. It is the most sought-after common variety and the benchmark most Singaporeans judge durian by. Look for deep-yellow flesh and a heady aroma.BEST FOR: durian die-hards who want the full-on, intense experience.AVAILABILITY (4 OCT 2026): fresh MSW is down to one seller. TASTE: before MSW took the crown, D24 was the benchmark, with a balanced bittersweet flavour and creamy, pale-to-golden flesh at a friendlier price.BEST FOR: anyone who wants a proper durian without paying top dollar, or a reference durian to compare the others against.AVAILABILITY (4 OCT 2026): this is now the cheapest fresh premium-style box on sale. Durian Delivery's Pahang XO D24 is in stock at $48 for 800g ($15/kg), and it is the only fresh line that seller has left. TASTE: named for its orange-tinged flesh, Red Prawn is sweeter and less bitter than MSW, with a soft, creamy, almost melt-in-the-mouth texture. It is a great gateway durian for anyone who finds MSW too intense.BEST FOR: people who prefer sweet over bitter, kids trying durian, and sharing with a group.AVAILABILITY (4 OCT 2026): none of the sellers we checked has it, fresh or frozen. 99 Old Trees marks Red Prawn D175 ($57 per 750g) Season Ended, Fresh Durian's King Red Prawn 800g box ($80) is sold out, Durian 36 has not relisted it, and Durian Delivery's frozen Milky Red Prawn pack, the last way to taste it in September, is now out of stock too. A street stall is the only realistic chance until the next harvest.

TASTE: the premium challenger to MSW, exceptionally smooth, creamy and intense, with a small seed and a lot of flesh. If you have done MSW and want to level up, this is the splurge.BEST FOR: serious durian lovers chasing the smoothest, richest bite.AVAILABILITY (4 OCT 2026): the September price inversion is over. Durian Delivery, where Black Thorn was briefly cheaper than MSW, has sold out of it fresh. The only fresh Black Thorn left is at Durian 36: $71.40 for 600g, $95.20 for 800g. Its badge reads $28/kg like its MSW, but it prices Black Thorn on 3.4kg of whole fruit per 800g instead of 3.2kg, so it costs $5.60 more than MSW in the same box. 99 Old Trees still marks Black Thorn D200 ($88 per 750g) Season Ended and Fresh Durian's Penang Black Thorn ($100) is sold out.FROZEN: Durian Delivery has cut its frozen 800g Black Thorn from $70 to $50.

TASTE: paler, slightly watery-looking flesh with a surprisingly sharp bittersweet kick and tiny seeds, so more flesh per bite. It has a loyal following among those who like a lighter texture with a strong finish.BEST FOR: fans of a bitter, aromatic profile who do not mind a less creamy texture.AVAILABILITY (4 OCT 2026): still the hardest of the six to find, and nobody we checked has it. 99 Old Trees marks Jinfeng D198 ($63 per 750g) Season Ended and its frozen Jinfeng is sold out, Fresh Durian's Golden Phoenix 800g box ($85.80) is sold out, and Durian Delivery lists a frozen Pahang Golden Phoenix 800g at $60 that is also out of stock. Wait for the next harvest or try a street stall.

TASTE: D13 and unbranded kampung durians are the everyday, budget options: sweet, fuss-free and easy on the wallet, often sold in value boxes during peak season.BEST FOR: casual snacking, big sharing sessions, and getting your durian fix without overspending.AVAILABILITY (4 OCT 2026): one budget line survives. Durian 36 still lists Hulu Wang at $16/kg, which its checkout prices at $38.40 for 600g and $51.20 for 800g, the cheapest fresh box on its board. The D24 ($16/kg) and XO ($18/kg) that joined it in September have been delisted again, and 99 Old Trees marks its own D13 ($55 per 750g) Season Ended. Durian Delivery's frozen Hulu and Kun Bao packs are out of stock. Street stalls remain the fallback for real kampung fruit.

The fresh season is over, and in the two weeks since our last check the delivery sellers have sold through almost everything that was left. Prices did not keep climbing; the fruit simply ran out, and frozen got cheaper.

The $30 frozen MSW box is $59.60 less than the cheapest fresh 800g MSW, the widest gap all season.
An advertised per-kg rate is for the whole, un-husked fruit, and roughly three-quarters of the weight is husk and seed.

No. Checked 4 October 2026, the main season is over. 99 Old Trees, the specialist that calls the season variety by variety, has marked every fresh line Season Ended since 12 September and sells only chilled and frozen durian over the counter (frozen MSW 450g, $53, walk-in only). Fresh durian has almost gone from delivery too: of the five sellers we check, only Durian 36 still sells fresh Mao Shan Wang ($89.60 for 800g), Black Thorn and Hulu Wang, and Durian Delivery has a single fresh line, Pahang XO D24 at $48 for 800g. Fresh Durian is sold out on all 14 lines and Royal Durian's fresh MSW is still sold out.
The 2026 mid-year season ended in September. Johor finished in July, a Pahang harvest restocked the market in August, and 99 Old Trees, which had dated that supply "till early September", closed its fresh season on 12 September and has not reopened. By 4 October the delivery sellers had sold through most of what was left. Malaysia usually produces a smaller second wave around November to December, with fewer varieties, higher prices and timing that shifts with the weather. Until then, frozen and chilled durian bridges the gap, and it is currently much cheaper than fresh.

Durian Delivery's only fresh box is Pahang XO D24 at $48 for 800g. Frozen: Durian Delivery has cut 800g Penang MSW to $30 and 800g Black Thorn to $50, with 1kg purees at $40 (MSW) and $30 (D24). Durian 36's frozen 800g boxes are $70.40 (MSW), $76.80 (Black Gold or Black Thorn) and $83.20 (Old Tree MSW). 99 Old Trees still prints $88 per 750g for MSW, but it cannot be ordered. Street stalls usually undercut delivery, when they have stock.
Because a per-kg rate is quoted for the whole, un-husked fruit, and roughly three-quarters of a durian's weight is husk and seed. Durian 36 states it on every product page: a 600g box is made from about 2.4kg of whole durian and an 800g box from about 3.2kg, so $28/kg becomes $67.20 and $89.60. Its Black Thorn is priced on 3.4kg per 800g, which is why the same $28 badge gives a $95.20 box. 99 Old Trees publishes a 26 to 27% flesh ratio. Always compare box against box, never badge against badge.
Both are premium, but they are after different things. Mao Shan Wang is the more intense fruit: thick golden flesh and a complex, almost boozy bittersweet finish. Black Thorn (Ochee) trades some of that bitterness for texture: exceptionally smooth and creamy, sweeter and rounder, with a small seed. On price, MSW is the cheaper of the two again. In September Black Thorn briefly undercut MSW at Durian Delivery, but that seller has now sold out of both fresh, and at Durian 36, the only fresh source left, Black Thorn costs $95.20 for 800g against $89.60 for MSW. Frozen, Durian Delivery's Black Thorn is $50 against $30 for MSW. For a group with durian newcomers, Black Thorn is still the easier sell.
A few practical tips: (1) Buy from a stall with high turnover, so the stock is fresher. (2) Ask for the price per kg AND watch it weighed before it is husked, so you know the cost upfront. (3) A good durian usually has a strong aroma and a stem that looks fresh, not dried out. (4) Most reputable stalls will let you see the flesh or open it on the spot and will replace a bad one, so confirm their policy first. (5) Out of season, when choice is thin, be extra wary of a stall pushing an unnamed kampung fruit at a premium price.
