Onggii Opens at Novena Square 2: A Hanok Interior by a Korean Master Designer, 12-Hour Gomtang, and 20% Off Every Visit Until 31 Oct

Onggii, home of Singapore's first Korean gomtang, has opened its third outlet at Novena Square 2, and it is the brand's most ambitious yet: the interior was designed with Korean hanok specialist Hwang Heejun (the designer behind the luxury Gyeongwonjae by Walkerhill hanok hotel in Incheon), with furniture, and even the chopsticks, brought in from Korea. We visited last Friday: latticed hanok screens glowing with backlit hanji paper, onggi pots on display shelves, and bowls of milky beef gomtang simmered for over 12 hours. The grand opening lobang: sign up as a member and get 20% off your visit, every visit, until 31 October 2026 (min. 1 gomtang or stew per visit).

Novena's hospital district just got the most beautiful bowl of soup in the neighbourhood. Onggii, the home of Singapore's first Korean gomtang, has opened its third outlet at Novena Square 2, and we went down last Friday to eat our way through it.

> Quick view: Onggii's third outlet is now open at Square 2, 10 Sinaran Drive, #03-33 (daily 11am to 10pm). First outlet designed with Korean hanok master Hwang Heejun; furniture imported from Korea. Grand opening: sign up as a member for 20% off every visit until 31 Oct 2026 (min. 1 gomtang or stew per visit).

The first Onggii built with a Korean master designer

This is Onggii's third outlet, but the first created in collaboration with a famous name from Korea's design world: hanok specialist Hwang Heejun, whose portfolio includes the luxury Gyeongwonjae by Walkerhill hanok hotel in Incheon. Working with Global Design Studio x H Design, and with textured finishes by Nippon Paint Singapore, he has turned a mall unit into something that genuinely feels like stepping into a Korean hanok.

The commitment runs deeper than the screens: the furniture, and even the chopsticks, are imported directly from Korea, and the restaurant's namesake onggi (옹기) earthenware pots, the traditional fermentation vessels, sit on backlit display shelves like museum pieces.

The food: 12-hour broths in earthenware pots

Onggii's kitchen is built on patience: the signature broths are slow-simmered for more than 12 hours. The classic is the milky beef gomtang, and the menu runs through chicken, pork, soybean and seafood broths, all served bubbling in onggi pots with house-fermented kimchi on the side.

What we tried on Friday: the milky gomtang (clean, deep, the kind of broth you drink to the last spoon), a fiery beef stew piled with leek, and a basket of crisp jeon served on a banana leaf that disappeared embarrassingly fast. Sides came in miniature onggi jars, kimchi included, and the yuja drink is the right call against the stew's heat.
