What's new
Founded in Tokyo in 1966, Matsuya has more than 1,000 outlets in Japan and marks its 60th anniversary this year. It is known for gyumeshi, its name for gyudon: thin slices of simmered beef and onions over rice. The menu also runs to Japanese curry, grilled eel and set meals. Managing director Jun Hamano told 8days that the Singapore menu is largely the same as Japan's, with a few additions such as the mentaiko mayonnaise bowls, which he said are popular in Hong Kong.
The ordering is fully self-service. You place your order at a kiosk, collect a queue number, take a seat and wait for your food.

These come from Matsuya's launch menu artwork, whose file name marks it "to be finalized", and some lines, such as the double-eel bowls, still print $00. The $5.50 beef bowl, $8.50 mentaiko bowl and $12.50 eel bowl all match 8days' 2 Nov report, but treat the kiosk as final for everything else. The menu shows no takeaway surcharge.
What it means for you
- It is priced for a cheap weekday lunch. A small bowl at $5.50 or curry rice at $6.90 is well under most mall lunches, and 8days judged prices fairly comparable with Sukiya and Yoshinoya. Our cheap lunch sets guide has more at this level.
- The reason to pick it over its rivals is the range. Hamano says the brand differentiates through grilled meat bowls (pork, chicken and boneless short rib). 8days' taster rated the eel bowl as the best dish tried, and praised the rice over Sukiya's, but would still pick Sukiya for its wider choice of rice bowls.
- Families get a very low price. The $3.50 kids' set is limited to dine-in and to children under 140cm, with grape or apple juice.
Fine print
- Hours: Matsuya's 28 Oct post says 10am-10pm, last order 9.30pm. CNA's 8days report says 9am-10pm. We have gone with the brand's own hours, so do not plan on an early breakfast without checking.
- Chicken dishes: opening coverage said these would be held back during the soft launch and grand opening week, so they may not be available yet.
- Not 24 hours: unlike Matsuya in Japan. Hamano said round-the-clock hours are possible if it expands into the heartlands, but no further outlet has been announced.
- Not a halal option: the menu includes pork.
- No opening deal: neither Matsuya's posts nor the 2 Nov coverage mention one.
