What "++" does to the bill

Most sit-down places quote prices before a 10% service charge and 9% GST, which adds about 19.9%. A $15.90++ plate is about $19.06 at the till, and a $30++ plate is about $35.97. Long John Silver's is the exception here: its prices already include GST and there is no service charge. Lad & Co's menu says only "subject to prevailing government tax", so expect GST on top.

Which fish should you order?

  • Dory (Pacific dory, or pangasius) is the default at chain prices. It is soft and mild, and it is why $15.90 is possible.
  • Haddock is the classic British choice: firmer flakes and a cleaner, slightly sweet taste. Big Fish Small Fish charges $6 more for it; Lad & Co uses nothing else.
  • Hake (Carnaby) and barramundi or snapper (Greenwood) sit in between, with a meatier bite than dory.
  • Black cod at Greenwood is the richest option and priced like it, at $39.95++.

How to choose

  • Cheapest hot meal, any hour? Long John Silver's, at one of its seven 24-hour outlets.
  • Weekday lunch near the office? Big Fish Small Fish's $8.90 set (until 3pm) or Fish & Co's Value Lunch (until 5pm).
  • Need halal? Big Fish Small Fish or Long John Silver's.
  • Want the proper British version? Lad & Co for haddock, Carnaby for tallow-fried hake.
  • Choosing the fish yourself? Greenwood Fish Market, and from 4 November it will be at VivoCity too.
