Science Centre Singapore has a new reason to go to Jurong East. Glowing Oceans, which the centre bills as Asia's first full-scale living bioluminescence exhibition, opens on Tuesday 3 November 2026. Its centrepiece is a shallow lagoon of live plankton you walk into, and every step leaves a trail of blue light. Singaporeans and PRs pay $7 off-peak, with Science Centre entry included.

What Glowing Oceans is

Bioluminescent blooms have occasionally lit up Singapore's shores, but city lights usually wash out the glow. Science Centre has built a fully dark-adapted hall instead, stocked with live dinoflagellates, single-celled plankton that flash blue when the water around them moves. The centre says the species on show are non-toxic and are not harmed by visitors.

The zones, per the official exhibition page:

  • The Lagoon: the signature piece. Pull on the booties provided and wade through the water; it lights up under your feet.
  • Touch Tables: swirl the water with your hands and watch thousands of plankton respond.
  • Dimitri's Desk: a mock marine biologist's field office with holographic deep-sea creatures.
  • Darwin's Cove: an animated story about Charles Darwin seeing glowing plankton on the HMS Beagle.

Allow 45 to 60 minutes.

What it means for you

For a family of Singaporeans, Glowing Oceans is one of the cheapest new attractions of the year: $28 for two adults and two kids on an off-peak weekday, with the rest of the Science Centre thrown in. The catch is timing. Book a weekday before 21 November, because the same family pays $44 at peak. If you want Halloween as well, Spookology closes on Sunday, so this weekend is the last chance.

Tickets are sold on science.edu.sg. Prices and conditions are from Science Centre Singapore's Glowing Oceans and Spookology pages, checked 29 October 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is Glowing Oceans cheapest?

On an off-peak weekday, when Singaporeans and PRs pay $7 for any age with Science Centre entry included. Science Centre classes weekends, public holidays and school holidays as peak, and the year-end school holidays start on Saturday 21 November, so from then until 31 December every day is peak ($12 adult, $10 child or senior). Go on a Tuesday to Friday between 3 and 20 November for the $7 rate. The Science Centre is closed on Mondays outside public and school holidays.

Can toddlers go into Glowing Oceans?

No. Science Centre says the exhibition is not suitable for children under 4 because it is a wet experience in low light, and children under 12 must be supervised by an adult at all times. Strollers are not allowed inside; leave them in the pay-per-use lockers near the Main Entrance or The Annexe.

Is Spookology Afterdark worth it over the daytime ticket?

Only if you want the extras. Daytime Spookology (10am-5pm, to Sunday 1 November) costs Singaporeans and PRs $10 per adult and covers the investigation trail and the spooky galleries. Afterdark ($25 online, usual price $40) runs 7pm-11pm on Friday 30 and Saturday 31 October only and adds an Omni-Theatre horror film, stargazing, DJs and one drink. Annual Pass holders pay $10 for Afterdark and get 50% off the daytime ticket.
