Octoburst!, Esplanade's children's festival, returns to the arts centre on Friday 2 October 2026, Children's Day, and every single programme in it is free.

Children's Day 2026 falls on Friday 2 October, a school holiday for primary schools and most preschools, so this lands on exactly the day a lot of families are already hunting for something to do.
Why this year is not just another edition
Octoburst! did not happen at Esplanade last year. The venue was tied up by the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix, and the festival went into schools instead. Esplanade's own producer's message for 2026 confirms the return to the arts centre, so this is the first edition in two years that families can simply walk into.
The 2026 theme is stories, built around two new commissions: Dear Story Keeper, a schools project that ran 2 to 18 September, and The Story Keeper's Room, the installation built from what those children wrote.

That is 19 separate start times across the day. The two 10am-to-6pm drop-ins mean you can turn up at almost any hour and have something to walk into.
The weekend part: 3 and 4 October
A Universe In Sounds by Tan Weiying and Gayle Nerva runs at PIP's PLAYbox on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 October, five times each day: 11.30am, 12.30pm, 3.15pm, 4.15pm and 5.15pm. It is a 30-minute gentle movement and soundscape journey into the world of Pangu, for age 3 and above.
This is the one with conditions attached:
- Slots are limited.
- Entry is open to Esplanade&Me members. Membership is free, so sign up before you go rather than at the door.
- Only one adult per child is admitted, and children must be accompanied.
The fine print worth knowing
- Nothing is ticketed on 2 October. The Story Keeper's Room states plainly that no tickets are issued and seating is first come, first served. Popular slots will fill, so arrive early for the 12pm and 5pm storytelling.
- Riff Raff Glitter Noise is roving, not seated. There is no fixed room to queue outside; the musicians travel through the space.
- Age guides differ by programme. Sports Day is recommended for 6 and above, Riff Raff for 3 and above, and the flower studio takes 2 and above, with under-2s needing a parent alongside.
- PIP's Club members get a gift. Esplanade's producer notes that PIP's Club members can redeem a special gift at the festival booth. PIP's Club is the kids' tier of the free Esplanade&Me membership, for children aged 12 and below.
- Two programmes are schools-only and not open to walk-in families: PIP's Arts Adventure (2 Oct to 31 Dec 2026) and Dear Story Keeper, which already closed on 18 September.
The bit that outlasts the festival
The Story Keeper's Room moves to PIP's PLAYbox from 3 October to 1 November 2026, open during PIP's PLAYbox hours. That gives you a free, indoor, air-conditioned rainy-afternoon option for a full month after Children's Day. Admission to PIP's PLAYbox is free but restricted to PIP's Club members, which is another reason to sign up for the free membership before 2 October rather than after.
What this actually costs a family
Zero. There is no admission fee, no per-programme charge and no minimum spend anywhere in the festival. On a Friday school holiday, when most paid attractions are charging a full weekday child rate, a whole day of programmed activity at a national arts centre for nothing is a genuinely rare thing to be able to plan around.
The honest limits: parking at Esplanade is not free, food and drink on site are priced like a city-centre venue, and an outdoor programme like Sports Day on the Esplanade Lawn or the 6pm and 8pm concerts at the DBS Foundation Outdoor Theatre is weather-dependent. Pack water and a backup plan for the outdoor slots.
