The cheapest pickleball in Singapore right now costs nothing, and it has been sitting at Science Park since mid-August without much noise. REINVENTION: ALLPLAY, the design festival CapitaLand Development runs at Singapore Science Park with OuterEdit and the support of the DesignSingapore Council, has turned the outdoor area at 7 Science Park Drive into PlayCourt, and the courts there are free to walk onto.

What is actually there

PlayCourt is the outdoor zone of a three-part festival, and it is the part with real sports equipment on it:

  • Two pickleball courts, sponsored by The Ark, one of the larger pickleball operators in Singapore.
  • Two table tennis tables.
  • Four basketball hoops.

Paddles and balls are left out in baskets by the nets, so you can turn up with nothing. There is no booking system, no registration and no counter to check in at. You walk on and play.

The zone runs 15 August to 22 November 2026, and its own listing on the festival site gives the hours as 7am to 7pm, Monday through Sunday. That early start is unusual and it matters here, because of the shelter problem below.

Is it free? Yes, with one asterisk

The festival's own site does not print the word "free" anywhere obvious, which is why this deal has stayed quiet. The confirmation is on the DesignSingapore Council's official events listing for REINVENTION: ALLPLAY, where the Event Fee field reads: free admission, ticketed (selected programmes).

That second half is the asterisk. Open play on the courts is the free side. Programmed activities under the same festival banner, the workshops and clinics that appear and disappear through the season, are not automatically free. Check each listing individually rather than assuming the festival name covers it.

The catches, honestly

  1. No shelter. Look at the court and there is open sky above it. Heavy rain ends the session, and a midday turn-up in September sun is punishing. The usable windows are roughly 7am to 9am and after 5pm, which is exactly why the 7am opening is the most useful number on this page.
  2. Only two pickleball courts, and no booking. First come first served. A weekday 6pm arrival, when Science Park's own offices empty out, is the likeliest time to find yourself waiting.
  3. The two-hour cap is etiquette, not a rule. Visitors report a courtesy limit of two hours per session so others get a turn. It is not printed on the festival's own page, so nobody is going to enforce it, and nobody is going to protect your slot either.
  4. The loan equipment is loan equipment. The official site publishes no inventory or spec for what is in those baskets. If you have a paddle you care about, bring it.
  5. Two of the three zones are done or nearly done. PlayLab, the indoor zone with the Trellix Tower and the Rube Goldberg machines, closed on 23 August. PlayMission at The Canopy, built around Ranger Buddies: The Planet Cup by Mandai X, closes on Sunday 13 September (Mon to Fri 11am to 8pm, weekends 10am to 8pm). So 12 to 13 September is the last weekend both PlayCourt and PlayMission run. After that, the courts are the reason to go.
  6. The site contradicts itself on hours. The general visitor information block gives 12pm to 7pm on weekdays and 10am to 7pm on weekends. PlayCourt's own zone card gives 7am to 7pm daily. The zone card is the one that governs the courts, but if you are making a 7am trip on a weekday, it is worth accepting some risk on that.

What free is worth here

The comparison that means something is against the sponsor's own price list. The Ark runs three paid pickleball sites in Singapore:

So two hours at Geneo is $40 to $50 you do not pay at the same operator's own venues. Across the wider market, private sheltered courts climb to $32 at peak and air-conditioned courts higher again.

Be fair about the other end, though. ActiveSG's outdoor courts start at $3.50/hr and its Kallang hard courts are $5.50/hr off-peak for locals, so two hours of paid public court is $7 to $11 with a roof over some of them and a booking that holds. The genuine argument for PlayCourt is not the money. It is that you can arrive at 7am, with nothing in your hands, without having booked anything.

  • MRT: Kent Ridge, Exit E.
  • Bus: 92 or 92A from Buona Vista MRT. Services 14, 33, 97, 166, 197, 963 and 963e run along the Buona Vista Flyover.
  • Car: from the AYE, take the Normanton Park or South Buona Vista Road exit via the slip road, then turn into Science Park Drive.
