Mid-Autumn Festival Singapore 2026: 8 Lantern Displays and Events, and Why Chinatown's Big Lanterns Are Missing This Year

The biggest free lantern display in Singapore this year, and the one that has effectively inherited Chinatown's crowd. It runs from Saturday 12 September to Sunday 27 September 2026, 6pm to 10pm nightly, across Golden Garden, Supertree Grove, Bayfront Plaza and the Flower Dome, and admission to the festival grounds is free. Nine installations follow a character called Fenbao through the gardens: Moonlit Garden and The Path of Wonder at Golden Garden, Waterfall Fantasy, The Garden Celebration, Gateway of Wonders and Colourful Blossoms at Supertree Grove, The Dream Forest at The Planet, The Voyage at Dragonfly Lake, and the Colonnade of Lights on the walkway towards Canopy, where 1,000 lanterns hand-painted by members of the public are hung low enough to photograph. Three performances anchor the run, all on the Supertree Grove Lawn: an LED lion dance on 12 September at 8.30pm to open, the Singapore Big Flag Championship on 27 September from 1pm to 7.30pm, and a dragon dance at 7.30pm that same night to close. A marketplace at Supertree Grove sells street food and runs carnival games and family rides (charges apply), and Friends of the Gardens members get 10% off the marketplace plus $3 off every $30 spent or topped up at the J'Kids carnival games. Craft Corner at the Colonnade runs on 13, 19, 20, 25, 26 and 27 September with fees on selected activities, and anyone holding a Gardens by the Bay attraction ticket dated 12 to 27 September gets a 1-for-1 on those craft activities. The quiet money-saver is indoors: Singapore-resident children aged 12 and below get free Flower Dome admission from 5 to 27 September, with accompanying adults paying the standard rate, and there is a free Fenbao sand art activity in there on 17 and 18 September and 24 to 27 September, 1.30pm to 5.30pm. Two rules to know before you pack: only battery-operated lanterns are allowed in the Gardens (no candles, no open flame), and performances are cancelled in wet weather. Car park lots are limited, so take the MRT to Bayfront or Gardens by the Bay station. BEST FOR: the full lantern-walk experience, families who want one big evening out, and anyone who used to make the Chinatown trip.

Free, and the longest run of any display this year if you read the right date. NParks lists the festival programmes as 19 to 27 September 2026, which is the line every roundup copies, but the lantern displays and light shows themselves are officially listed as 19 September to 4 October 2026, 6.30pm to 10.30pm daily, and the event's own key visual says the same: lantern displays till 4 October. That means the week after Mid-Autumn is the quiet week to go. The story this year is the Legend of the White Snake, told across five scenes along Lakeside Field, from Bai Suzhen gaining human form to her meeting with the scholar Xu Xian at Broken Bridge, ending at the Cloud Pagoda in the Chinese Garden with a light show and a reimagined reunion of all four characters. Light shows run at the Cloud Pagoda in the Chinese Garden and at the Floral Garden and Resthouse Pond in the Japanese Garden. Opening night, 19 September, carries the free NParks Concert Series in the Park: Rockestra, from 6.30pm at the Ficus Lawn stage in the Chinese Garden, themed Hits through the Decades with Supersonic, Music and Drama Company, Shirlyn and the UnXpected, and ShiLi and Adi, hosted by Power98's JK and 883JIA's Ben. Around the lanterns at Lakeside Garden there are lantern riddles, National Gallery Singapore's Roving Art Studio, performances from ArtsEverywhere@CDC and ART:DIS, the Mediacorp Lantern Trail, bouncy castles from Families for Life and a food market. There is also a stamp rally, Xiao Qing's Special Delivery, running 19 September to 4 October at landmarks across the Chinese Garden, with keepsake redemption only on 19, 20, 25, 26 and 27 September at the Bonsai Garden, 6.30pm to 9.30pm. Nearest MRT is Lakeside or Chinese Garden. BEST FOR: a proper walk-through lantern trail, late-September visits after the crowds thin, and anyone who wants a free concert with their lanterns.

The one to pick if the children are small. VivoCity has turned its Level 3 Sky Park into an open-air Mid-Autumn garden built around Hello Kitty, Cinnamoroll, Kuromi, My Melody, Hangyodon and Pompompurin, running from 25 August to 27 September 2026 as part of the mall's 20th anniversary. Six themed zones fill the roof, including Kuromi Carnival Kingdom with a five-metre Kuromi inflatable, carnival game booths and a Mini Express Train ride, plus lantern-filled gardens, waterscapes and waterfront photo spots that come into their own once the lights go on after dark. Seven two-metre character inflatables are scattered around the rest of the mall over the same dates. Walking in and looking costs nothing, but the good bits are receipt-gated: a Sanrio Characters toiletries pouch needs S$250 across up to two same-day receipts, a foldable umbrella needs S$400, Kids Club members can redeem a Sanrio lantern with a single S$120 receipt, and a Meet and Greet pass with the characters needs S$80 in one receipt with only the first 30 qualifying redemptions per session accepted. Meet and greet sessions ran on 29 and 30 August and 5 and 6 September, with one more on 19 September, so that is the date to aim for if photos with the characters are the point. A Sanrio retail pop-up sits at East Court on Level 1 near CHAGEE, 10am to 10pm, to 27 September, and the TANGS Mid-Autumn Fair at Central Court on Level 1 sells mooncakes and gift sets from close to 50 brands until 25 September. Nearest MRT is HarbourFront, and the Sky Park is exposed, so it is worth checking the weather. BEST FOR: preschoolers and primary-school children, an indoor fallback if it rains, and mooncake shopping in the same trip.

Read this one before you make the trip, because what Chinatown is doing this year is not what the photos in older guides show. The Chinatown Festival Committee has decided not to decorate Eu Tong Sen Street and New Bridge Road with large-format lanterns at all, ending a 24-year run. Committee chairman Peh Cheng Hoo has said the focus is shifting to the local community, and that large-format lanterns are now regularly seen at major attractions such as Gardens by the Bay. In their place, community lantern booths and displays run from 11 September to 4 October 2026 at Kreta Ayer Community Club, Kreta Ayer Square and Banda Street, where visitors can write a wish on a lantern and add it to a display that grows through the month. The centrepiece evening is Light a Lantern, Share Your Blessing on 19 September from 6pm: a community lantern procession, a mooncake and tea appreciation session, lantern riddles in all four official languages and a lantern design competition at Kreta Ayer Community Club. Separately, the Chinatown Business Association is running a street celebration on Smith Street on 19 September from 2pm, jointly presented with the Singapore Poon Yue Association and Kong Chow Wui Koon: a lion dance and wushu at 2pm, ukulele performances and community singing at 3pm and 4.45pm, and heritage games at 3.30pm, 4pm and 5pm giving out 30 F&B vouchers per slot. A lantern painting competition for ages 7 to 12 runs that morning at 9.30am with online registration that closed on 9 September. Three neighbourhood editions are also held at River Place, Havelock View and Chin Swee-Hong Lim. Everything is free. BEST FOR: the traditional street atmosphere, mooncake shopping around Chinatown Point and People's Park, and anyone who prefers a community night to a ticketed attraction.

The hands-on option, run by Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall inside Lights by the Lake, and it is the item people miss because it does not run every night. It opens on only five dates, 19, 20, 25, 26 and 27 September 2026, 6.30pm to 9.30pm, at the Bonsai Garden and Tea Pavilion in the Chinese Garden at Jurong Lake Gardens, and admission is free. Activities are drop-in: lantern making at the craft station with admission every 30 minutes and last admission at 9pm, a hanfu dress-up and photo experience supported by Murong Hanfu, heritage discovery game stations, and multi-layered stamp printing. Storytelling sessions, Tales of Mid-Autumn Festival, run on the two Sundays only, 20 and 27 September, at 6.45pm and 7.30pm at the Tea Pavilion, with local authors and storytellers on the legends behind the festival, supported by the Speak Good English Movement and the Speak Mandarin Campaign. This is also where the Xiao Qing stamp rally keepsakes are redeemed, so if the children are collecting stamps around the Chinese Garden, the Bonsai Garden on one of those five nights is the stop that matters. Because it sits inside Lights by the Lake, you get the lantern trail and the light shows in the same trip. BEST FOR: children who want to make something rather than just look, hanfu photos, and anyone who found the crowds at Gardens by the Bay too much.

The Orchard Road stop, and the only display on this list where the artwork is for sale. From 2 to 27 September 2026, Paragon fills its Level 1 atrium with 50 one-of-a-kind rabbit sculptures set against a luminous moon backdrop, with another 50 placed along the mall's exterior landscaping to form a trail leading inside. The rabbits were reinterpreted by students from Raffles Design Institute and artists from ART:DIS Singapore, working across fashion, jewellery and product design, and four were designed by guest contributors including Senior Parliamentary Secretary Eric Chua and CapitaLand executives. All 50 of the bespoke sculptures can be adopted at S$800 each through a QR code beside each piece or Paragon's online catalogue, with proceeds going directly to ART:DIS, a registered Institution of a Public Character that issues tax-deductible receipts, and CapitaLand Hope Foundation matching contributions dollar for dollar up to S$40,000 in support of ART:DIS' Foundation Visual Arts Programme. Adopted pieces stay on display until 27 September before collection. Around the installation, the atrium hosts live instrumental performances with traditional Chinese instruments on selected weekends, candle customisation workshops for Paragon Club members, and free face painting and balloon sculpting under Paragon Junior for children aged two and above. Paragon Club members spending at least S$1,000 across up to three combined same-day receipts from 2 to 27 September can claim an exclusive 290 Grand Reserve tea set, and there are up to 2,675 bonus points on offer, which Paragon values at S$1,070. The east-side option, and the one with the most repeatable evening. Moonlit Wonder runs at Pasir Ris Mall from 28 August to 4 October 2026 (the mall's own campaign artwork carries those dates, while its promotions listing shows a shorter 28 August to 27 September window, so treat 4 October as the last night for the nightly shows). The set piece is Chang'e's Moonlight Spectacular at the Level 2 Central Greenway, a whimsical garden themed on Chang'e's mythical garden. Bubble Bliss Under the Moon runs daily from 28 August to 4 October at 6.30pm to 7pm and again 9pm to 9.30pm, which makes this the easiest one to drop into on a weeknight without planning. Celestial Luminous Dance and Juggle Under the Stars by Jay Che ran on selected dates in late August and the first half of September. Two dates carry the fuller programme: on 20 and 25 September at the Level 2 Event Space next to Decathlon, there is a lantern-making workshop from 4pm to 8pm redeemable with 100 Great Rewards points, a glow and shine face tattoo session from 7pm to 8pm with a S$20 same-day receipt, Chang'e and the Moon storytelling from 8pm to 8.30pm, and a lantern parade and jade rabbit hunt at the Central Greenway from 8.30pm to 9pm. Shoppers spending S$30 in a single same-day receipt from 4 to 27 September can collect a Moonlit Bunny Adventure stamp card, solve riddles at nine stations, and the first 800 completed cards get a set of two Jade Bunny hand towels, with 2,000 stamp cards available in total and two redemptions per Great Rewards member per day at the Level 2 customer service counter, 10am to 8.30pm. BEST FOR: families in the east, a low-effort weeknight outing, and anyone who likes a mall trail with a prize at the end.

One night, one shot, and nothing else on this list is doing it. Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital holds its Mid-Autumn Festival 2026, themed Hearts Aglow Together, on Saturday 19 September 2026 from 6pm to 9pm at its Serangoon Road campus, and the centrepiece is an attempt at the Singapore Book of Records for the Largest Display of Kong Ming Lanterns. Around the record attempt there are lantern installations and festive displays, plus interactive cultural activities and performances built for a mix of ages, because the evening is designed to bring the hospital's seniors together with families, volunteers and donors rather than to be a ticketed attraction. That is also the reason to go: it is the one event here where the lanterns are the by-product of a community gathering rather than a commissioned installation, and it sits a short walk from Boon Keng and Farrer Park MRT stations. Because it is a single evening in a care setting, it is worth checking the hospital's event page close to the date for any registration or capacity notes before turning up with a large group. BEST FOR: seeing something you cannot see anywhere else that week, multigenerational outings, and anyone who wants the community side of Mid-Autumn rather than the spectacle.
