8 Best Japanese Language Schools in Singapore (2026): Beginner Classes From $305 a Term

A beginner term of Japanese in Singapore costs $305 to $490, but the real difference is hours: the cheapest schools give you 25-30 hours a term, the dearest 16-20. We read the fees, October to January intakes and offers of eight schools on their own sites on 1 October 2026.

Most Japanese schools in Singapore charge about the same per term, so compare the hours you get, not the sticker.

> Quick view: best value is Hougang JLS at $370 for 30 hours (about $12 an hour); the most start dates are at Japanese Explorer, $350; the catch is that none of these eight takes SkillsFuture Credit for Japanese now.

Hougang Japanese Language School: the Best Value, $370 for 30 Hours at Five Outlets

Founded in 1983, Hougang JLS calls itself Singapore's first Japanese language school, and it is still the cheapest per hour of the schools here. Elementary 1, 2 and 3 (JLPT N5 level) cost $370 a term for 30 hours, and the school says the Elementary 1 fee includes the textbook and notes. Intermediate 1-3 (N4) is $380, then N3 $420, N2 $440 and N1 $480. The school says it is not GST-registered, so there is no GST on top; new students pay a $20 registration fee. Kids classes (ages 4-12) are $280 for eight 1.5-hour lessons, and one-to-one lessons are $60 an hour. There is no free trial. Outlets: Blk 204 Hougang St 21 #04-113/119 (Kovan, 6282 7590, registration Mon-Fri 1pm-8pm, Sat-Sun 10:30am-3:30pm), Blk 133 Jurong Gateway Rd #03-291 (8202 4268), Blk 247 Tampines St 21 #01-K1, Blk 894B Woodlands Dr 50 #01-49, and a City Hall classroom at The Adelphi (by appointment). Not SkillsFuture-claimable.

3-course package on its class page: Elementary 1-3 at $340 a term instead of $370, Intermediate 1-3 at $360 instead of $380, N3 $400, N2 $420, N1 $470, and $40 off three kids terms. Undated offer, read 1 Oct 2026.

How we checked

We read every fee, intake date and offer on the schools' own websites and timetables on 1 October 2026. Where a site does not say whether its fee includes GST (Bunka, Japanese Explorer, inlingua, JCS), we quote the fee as printed. Hougang JLS says it is not GST-registered. We left out IKOMA Language School at Shaw House (Basic part-time terms from $490, October intakes from 12 Oct) only because it publishes no photo large enough for a card; its fees and dates are on ikoma.com.sg.

How to choose a Japanese class

  • Compare hours, not fees: a $350 term of 16 hours costs more per hour than a $370 term of 30 hours.
  • Check what "beginner" means: Bunka starts absolute beginners on a 6-lesson Foundation course, and Tomo has a separate Beginner course before Basic Part 1. Others start you straight on Elementary or Beginner 1.
  • Watch the intake calendar: the Japanese Association and JCS only take beginners at set points in the year, so missing a window can cost you a term. The schools with rolling intakes (Japanese Explorer, Hougang, inlingua) let you start within weeks.
  • Do not plan on SkillsFuture: inlingua and Lingo say their language courses are no longer claimable, and Bunka marks SkillsFuture as unavailable. Union members can try NTUC UTAP at Bunka.
  • Ask about textbooks and GST before paying: they can add $35-$60 and 9% to the term fee.
