Heading to Japan, Korea or Europe for the year-end holidays? We checked the winter ranges, prices and rental rates of five shops and two rental services in Singapore on 4 October 2026, from a $9.90 thermal top to a $950 Arc'teryx shell.
A down jacket you wear for ten days a year should not cost more than the flight.
> Quick view: cheapest is Decathlon, with a down jacket at $39.90; most proper winter parkas run $99-$270; if you travel only once, renting from $45 a week beats buying, but book early because December stock goes first.
How we checked
Every price above was read from the shop's own website or online store on 4 October 2026, not from Shopee, Lazada or a resale listing. Rental rates come from each service's own rate card or product pages. We left out The North Face because it has no Singapore online store to verify prices against, and The Chilled Closet because it no longer appears to be trading. Winter stock and sale prices change weekly from October to December, so check the page before you go.
How to dress for the cold without overspending
- Layer, don't buy one huge coat. A thermal top, a fleece and a down or puffer jacket handle most of Japan and Korea in December. Add a waterproof shell only for snow or rain.
- Match the jacket to the temperature. Around 5°C to 12°C, UNIQLO PUFFTECH or a light down is enough. Below 0°C, or skiing, go for a rated parka or ski jacket.
- Rent for kids and one-off trips. Children outgrow jackets every year, and rental from $15 a week (Popsicle) or $49 for 10 days (Coldwear) costs far less than buying.
- Don't skip hands and feet. Gloves, wool socks and waterproof boots matter more than a pricier jacket in snow.
- Book rentals now for December. Popsicle advises three to four months ahead for peak season, and popular sizes go first.
- Check your baggage allowance. Down packs small, but boots don't; wear the bulkiest pieces on the plane.
