For the first time, you can keep Malaysian ringgit sitting in a Singapore bank account, and time your own exchange rate instead of taking whatever the JB moneychanger shows on the day.
> Quick view: from 23 Oct 2026, the OCBC Global Savings Account (and Premier version) adds MYR, the first non-Malaysian bank to offer it in a Singapore-based savings account. Convert in-app at your own timing, hold up to MYR50,000, earn 1% p.a. to 30 Jun 2027 (average daily balance MYR5,000; 0.5% p.a. after), and spend or withdraw in Malaysia with no FX transaction or conversion fees.
WHY THIS IS ACTUALLY NEW
The ringgit is a tightly controlled, non-internationalised currency, so holding it in a bank account outside Malaysia has been close to impossible for ordinary consumers. Multi-currency wallets that do carry MYR pay no interest on it. OCBC's move puts ringgit inside a regulated Singapore deposit account, with interest, which is why the "first non-Malaysian bank" claim matters beyond marketing.
With MYR added, the account covers 11 currencies: SGD plus AUD, CAD, CHF, EUR, GBP, HKD, JPY, NZD, USD and now MYR (OCBC's own product page lists the first 10 today, with ringgit joining on 23 October).
THE MECHANICS: convert when the rate suits you
- Open or add currencies in the OCBC app: Accounts, then Global Savings Account, select MYR
- Convert SGD to MYR under Pay & Transfer, then Local, then Global Savings Account; the SGD equivalent shows before you confirm
- Hold up to MYR50,000 at any one time
- Earn 1% p.a. until 30 June 2027 on an average daily balance of MYR5,000, then 0.5% p.a. thereafter
THE POINT OF ALL THIS: you convert when SGD is strong, not when you happen to be standing at a counter in a JB mall. OCBC's own data shows people already behave this way: when the yen weakened in January 2026, customers drove yen conversions to their highest monthly level in over a year, and Global Savings Account openings jumped more than 25% between July and September 2026 after the SGD strengthened.

SPENDING IT ACROSS THE CAUSEWAY
- Card payments: pay with the linked OCBC debit card, or the same card in Apple Pay or Google Pay, at any merchant accepting debit cards; the sum comes straight off your MYR balance with no foreign currency transaction fee
- ATM cash: withdraw at any ATM in Malaysia with no FX conversion fee as long as your MYR balance covers it; bank-operated ATMs add no usage fee
- The one fee that survives: standalone non-bank ATM operators (the machines in malls and convenience stores) may charge their own service fee, which varies by operator, so stick to bank ATMs
Malaysia is OCBC customers' single most popular overseas spending destination, accounting for one in three overseas transactions, with spending growing 25% a year since 2022, and the upcoming JB-Singapore RTS Link will only push that further.
WORTH KNOWING BEFORE YOU PILE IN
- The 1% p.a. is promotional: it needs an average daily balance of MYR5,000 and ends 30 June 2027, dropping to 0.5% p.a.
- The MYR50,000 cap is per account, at any point in time
- Locking a rate is only a win if you convert when SGD is strong; ringgit parked in the account is still exposed to the exchange rate until you spend it
- Launch date is Thursday 23 October 2026, on both the Global Savings Account and the Premier Global Savings Account
